CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

The next day, Brian was invited down for breakfast.

He felt a little weak on his feet. A little shaky. Which wasn’t surprising. He hadn’t stood up in days. He used to feel a little weak and shaky if he spent too long in bed when he was having a lie-in. So a few days out of action was a whole different kettle of fish—if that was how the saying went. Was that how the saying went? Or was his memory fucking with him now, too?

He walked across the cool, creaky wooden bedroom floors, towards the door. Tabitha by his side at all times. She wasn’t holding his arm or anything. Wasn’t even offering to help him.

In a way, he didn’t mind. After all, he didn’t want to appear too weak. Too… well, flimsy. He didn’t want her to think he couldn’t look after himself.

But at the same time… he wondered if Tabitha’s reasoning for not helping him might have more to do with her fears about whatever state he was in than seeing how capable he was.

He remembered her words, as he lay in bed yesterday.

This infection. It’s changing. There are things I’ve seen. Things you wouldn’t believe…

Words to that effect, anyway.

What was she talking about?

He wasn’t exactly surprised. He couldn’t be. He’d seen for himself that this virus, infection, whatever it was… it wasn’t normal. There were layers to it that weren’t immediately clear when it first broke out. The way it seemed to be airborne. And then the way it transmitted through fear. The way it messed with senses. And then…

That mould.

That fungus.

That parasitic gunk.

Bursting out of the bodies of the fallen.

Forming. Becoming something else. Right in front of him.

Taking on a humanoid form.

He’d never forget looking at that towering form, right in front of him, in the cellar.

Seeing the fear in its eyes.

Calming himself down as well as he could, to try and hold it back.

To try and stop it.

And…

Seeing its eyes change.

Seeing them turn from Jadon’s terrified eyes to his terrified eyes.

And then to his calmer eyes…

And then the explosion, and the flames, and the darkness, and…

He stepped out of the bedroom door, and onto a long corridor. It was strange. This place wasn’t what he expected. It looked genuinely ancient. There were exposed grey brick walls. Archaic pictures hanging from those walls—Renaissance-style art, if that’s what it even was. Brian didn’t care enough to know. Paintings and portraits of kings and queens. All of them a little dusty. Covered in cobwebs.

A red carpet ran along the landing area towards a large staircase, bang in the middle of the house. A grand staircase. The carpet looked like it’d seen some years. It was red, but it’d gone a bit of a lighter shade, through wear, tear, and sunlight.

Opposite the staircase, there was a large window. Covered in condensation. Outside, Brian could see fields. Stretching on for miles. It looked like some sort of farmhouse. One of the most ornate farmhouses he’d ever seen, mind. More like a bloody castle.
